Two Guys And A Ride

This past week I had the privilege to drive the newly redesigned 2021 Genesis G80.   Wow, I got to say I was impressed, and yes the technology was good and plentiful, but the ride and the driving experience were fantastic.  I’ve ridden in some pretty nice Mercedes and I would stack this up anyone of them for ride comfort, seriously, it was crazy good!  Ok back to technology….

The Drivers Information screen was located between the analogue speedometer and the Digital Tachometer.  The set up was Identical to the new Genesis GV80, which is their new SUV.  The setup for the screen I think, is excellent.  It only uses 2 buttons to control the whole screen, most of the main items (which you customize) were a simple one press of a button to access.  There was a Driver’s safety screen which showed items such as Lane Keeping, Adaptive Cruise and so on.  The second screen should a compass if Navigation was not running a route, and showed Turn-by-Turn directions if it was running a route.  The third screen contained multiple “pages” or screens which you could customize in terms of what you wanted to show and what you wanted to hide, but it contained things such as your tire pressure, Media, Phone etc.  And all of that was accessible simply by using the scroll button to move through the screens.  If you wanted to access a few more settings, each of the available screens had a sub menu that was accessible just by clicking the scrolling wheel.

So what Genesis has done here, is to make it very easy and intuitive to operate the system, which is I think, the perfect way to design the information in the screen, well done Genesis!

The Infotainment Screen itself was 14.5” long and about 4-5 inches tall.  Genesis has provided multipole ways to control the system.  First there is voice command, which will operated phone, media, navigation and climate.  Secondly there is the touch screen itself.  Last there is a control mounted in the center console that can control most everything in the infotainment screen.  My one knock on the system is that when you get the screen that allows you to control the passenger seat movement, you have to switch to using the infotainment screen by touching the arrows on the screen, instead of using the arrows on the controller in the center console.  But at least you can move the passenger seat without having to get out of the car which is a very nice convenience.

This particular car had the Lexicon Premium sound system and had Navigation, Wireless Apple CarPlay and Wireless Android Auto, AM, FM and HD Radio, Sirius XM, Bluetooth and a 4G Wifi Hotspot.

Sound wise it had Quantum Logic, Surround Sound, Clari-Fi and had 1050 Watts of power.  It had 19 speakers located in the doors, dash, and rear of the car.  The speakers themselves were as follows:

4 50mm midrange speakers

1 19mm Tweeter Array Style speaker

4 19mm front and rear Ring Neo Tweeters

2 80mm Kevlar Cone front and rear midrange speakers

4 16cm front and rear woofers

2 80mm Aluminium Cone midrange surrounds

2 20cm Inverted underseat subwoofers, and

1 14 channel Digital sound processing Class D Amplifier

The front seats were heated and ventilated and were 12 way powered on both seats, so plenty of adjustments could be made.  It had a Tri-zone climate system and a very responsive touch screen for the climate, worked great.

So overall, a very well put together car where all the technology is simple and intuitive to use, and it all functions quickly, is responsive, and intuitive to use.  Definitely a must drive, if your looking for a sedan in the $60,000 price arena.  Top all of the above off with a very long and impressive list of safety features that are standard on every Genesis G80 trim level.
