1970 Buick GSX Stage 1
The Buick Gran Sport name was first introduced on the 1965 Skylark as a competitor to the Pontiac GTO. The first Gran Sport had a Wildcat 325 horsepower 401 cid "nailhead" V8 and was known as a "gentleman’s Hot Rod".
In 1970 the Gran Sport GSX packed a 350 horsepower 455 cid V8 with 510 ft-lbs of torque beneath its Ram-Air hood. A special "tight" suspension, 3.64 rear end, front/rear spoilers and graphics with only two available color schemes. 678 GSX model were built in 1970 and only 178 were painted Apollo White, with the balance being Saturn Yellow.
The Big Three and AMC were having a grand old time trying to beat each other’s brains out. War has that effect. The weapons of choice included Ford’s mighty 428 and 429 CI artillery, Chrysler’s battalion of 426 Hemi and 440-powered war wagons, and AMC’s underdog guerilla fighters toting warmed-up 390s.
Over at GM, muscle was on the march. The self-imposed 400 CI limit for compacts and intermediates was summarily snuffed, and V-8s could once again be found on the plus-size rack. There was Chevy’s 454/450 HP LS6; Pontiac’s GTO, available with the 400/370 HP Ram Air IV (a 455 CI HO could also be made to order); and Oldsmobile had its 442 W-30 for the fifth model year and its own 455 mazunga that matched the GTO Ram Air IV’s 370 HP rating, as well as a new heavy cruiser from the division that for years owed its success to producing cars purchased by bank managers, aging dowagers and elderly retirees who shopped exclusively at stores offering a senior discount. It was called the Buick GSX.
Rather than stop there, Buick unleashed the GSX in 1970, and, if you listened closely, you could have heard the “Uh-ohs” being muttered among competing brands. And deservedly so. The 1970 Buick GSX, based on the GS455, was to become one of America’s fastest performance cars almost before its only two colors—Saturn Yellow and Apollo White—were completely dry.
