2023 Chevrolet Colorado - Technology

General Info

The 2023 Chevrolet Colorado is the third generation to come out since 2003-2004.  In 2023 the pickup received a complete upgrade in terms of technology including an all digital 11” dash in the ZR2 trim level only, while all other trim levels come standard with an 8” Digital Drivers Screen, and an 11.3” center display on all trim levels.  To see our full review of the Driver’s and Infotainment Screens click the link below the title or click on the link in our profile to see our YouTube Channel.

Driver’s Screen

On the 2023 ZR2 trim level, the 11” fully digital drivers screen comes standard, and it includes several items that are not found in the 8” versions, and in general is just easier to look at and read information from as the space is just physically larger, and easier on the eyes.  In 2024, the 11” screen becomes standard or optional on the Trail Boss trim levels and up.

There is an interesting trend in Chevrolet, GMC, and Buick Driver Screens, to “box” the customizations you can do.  In other words, although it is quite customizable, those customizations tend to come as a set of things, rather than individual items.  You change one item, and it changes three others.  My thought is that they are trying to group custom features into sets of info that make sense together, but at the same time, it does take away from the ability to truly customize the screen to your liking, as you could do in earlier Chevrolet trucks.  Time will tell, if this was a good move.

On the plus side, the graphics are good, clear, and readable, and the screen allows the user to see the items they want, with ease.

Infotainment Screen

The 11.3” infotainment screen is based on Google Built in, but also has wireless Apple CarPlay, and wireless Android Auto, along with an available wireless charger.  The way Google Built in works is on a subscription fee per month.  Now, when you buy the vehicle, you do get a trial period that is free, but you’ll want to verify with your dealership on how long of a trial you have.  After that trial period, you will have to purchase a plan through On Star to continue using the Navigation, Voice Command, and Google Play Store Apps.  You can of course continue to use Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and then use the Google Maps app, nor any other compatible app (such as Sirius XM)  from your phone.

The Infotainment Screen is customizable meaning you can move apps around just like you do on your phone, so the ones you use most frequently are the most accessible.

One feature that will be interesting to see if Chevrolet removes and goes back to using traditional controls, is the Head Light Switch.  Gone is the simple traditional, easy to find and use, physical control, now it is in the infotainment screen.  It is always there at the top of the screen, and you can still flash your high beams, or switch from High Beam to Low Beam (if you have turned off the “Auto Feature” for the lights in the infotainment screen), using the stalk on the steering column.  It will be interesting to see how well this feature works for customers.

Wrap Up

On the whole, the infotainment screen is beautiful, in terms of how it looks, and its responsiveness to touch,  Information is well placed and easy to get at, and there’s plenty of

different types of information, enough to satisfy almost any driver.
