1939 Chris-Craft Barrel Back Tour
Step into lake legend status with the 1939 Chris-Craft 19' Deluxe Runabout, the wood-hulled icon boat fans call the barrel back. We tour an early ’39 with one-piece covering boards, Bugatti windshield panes that fold down, chrome plated brass hardware, and AC Delco instruments that echo Detroit dashboards. Inside are front and rear bench seats, step pads for boarding, and classic runabout cockpit seating under an aft deck. Power is the original Chris-Craft Model M, 339 cubic inches and rated 130 horsepower, finished in factory Chris-Craft blue. Fuel sits aft in a 30 gallon tank, and storage up front is basically a small glove box. Would you daily this car? Drop your thoughts below. Out back is the rounded transom that floats like a barrel, though Chris-Craft called it torpedo style. Production spanned 1939 to 1942, with squarer bows in 1939–40 and a more rounded bow in 1941–42. Early ’39 boats used huge single-plank mahogany covering boards, later models switched to two-piece boards to save stock. The hull exterior is mahogany with oak framing inside, plus fender cleats, a single horn, and tidy deck hardware. We filmed at the Minneapolis Boat Show inside the Land O’ Lakes Classic Boat Club with Freedom Boat Service, where craftsmanship details shine from bow seam to aft deck. Two Guys and a Ride brings you the facts, the sounds, and the little touches that make this runabout a time capsule.
